As part of my Scandinavian adventure, I boarded a Hurtigruten ferry in Bergen bound for Kirkenes (1,500 miles north near the Russian border). I jumped off at the Lofoten Islands in North Norway in search of puffin birds! I stayed in a few rorbuer (fishing huts) in the off-season, which provide a cheap accommodation base from which to explore. With a population of 24,500, the 8 principal islands of Lofoten are characterised by their mountains and peaks, sheltered inlets, stretches of seashore and large virgin forest areas.Didn’t see any puffins, but caught a few Northern Light shows (unfortunately didn’t have a camera that could take a reasonable shot). But that memory will linger forever.
